Welcome to the Strawberry Scribe
What is this place?
The Strawberry Scribe is my home on the internet.
This blog serves as my voice and connection to the community of storytellers and gamers who struggle with mental illness, disabilities, and LGBTQ acceptance. I reflect books, games, anime, and other geeky subjects, often from my perspective of someone who struggles.
Join me to celebrate your passions and who you are as a person.
What are your experiences?
I was born tongue-tied, meaning I limited mobility of my tongue. To fix it, I underwent minor surgery that ended up making my tongue shorter than needed and thus giving me a speech impediment.
When I was about ten years old I roller skated my head into a metal fence and had a concussion. Ever since that accident my memory has been poor and my balance terrible.
During high school I began to conclude that doing anything was useless and stopped caring about grades or my personal hygiene. Anger issues also became more apparent. This was the first instance of my Bipolar disorder, though I wasn’t official diagnosed until 2008.
It was also around this time I began to feel attracted to both boys AND girls, believing something was wrong with me. When I realized I was Bisexual, I told my friends and family – who were surprisingly accepting.
In the summer of 2005 I was raped by my boyfriend – the only person to tell me they loved me at that point in my life. This changed my entire outlook on life, and left me hating many trivial things and feeling doubtful, anxious, and paranoid. Along with the Bipolar I was diagnosed with PTSD.
For as long as I can remember I’ve dealt with an annoying issue known as Excoriation disorder – basically I have the repeated urge to pick at my skin. Sometimes I waste hours doing so and it often leaves my fingers damaged with wounds.
More recently I’ve obtained back and hip pain due to my weight and large chest. It causes physical activities such as doing the dishes or walking much harder than they should be.
Who are you?
I’m Stephanie Kay, a 20-something chick who likes to talk. Sometimes too much.
I also go by Stephy in real life or Melaniipon and Strawberry online – depending on where you go.
Ever since I was a little girl I’ve been making up stories and drawing stick figures to go with them. My dream was to become a writer, or rather, a storyteller. Despite having an off childhood, I thank my parents for passing their creative genes onto me, as well as introducing me to the great mediums of books and video games.
I currently live in South Carolina with my partner in crime S and a cat who acts like a rambunctious child. We are developing an RPG with our friends at Nerd Bomb Studios. I also write about public transportation with a friend at SC Transit Chronicles.
